Can’t be Mr. Beast? Community service clubs may be the closest thing

At Conant, there are a variety of clubs to join, including competitive clubs and those for relaxation and fun. However, one type of club commonly overlooked by students is community service clubs.

They are a great way to help people in your community have better opportunities to succeed in their environment, not to mention the several other benefits community service clubs can offer.

Let’s start off on a note that many people may mistakenly assume about these clubs before really knowing—the scary concept of “not having enough time for everything” that students stress about today. Many people believe that when they join a community service club, they won’t have enough time for other commitments like sports, activities, or homework.

This is not a problem, as many clubs have flexible time structures and allow you to miss certain meetings as long as you contact them. The founder of UNICEF, Siya Choudhary, ’24, states that time management is not a huge problem as long as you contact them in advance about missing a meeting.

Choudhary also states that at the end of the day, if you are interested and can meet at certain times, you can join as the more people, the bigger impact on the community they can have.

Other clubs like Conant Community Service Club value the time of their members. One of the club leaders, Wiktoria Roziecki, ’24, stated that they have always valued their members’ time and have shifted their meeting day for those reasons.

On the note of making a big impact on the community, when joining a community service club, not only will your day be made better by helping, but also the days of the people you have provided new opportunities.

In UNICEF, Comp Sci Kids, and Conant Community Service Club, students feel a sense of fulfillment of accomplishment in what they have done. Roziecki states, “Just seeing the people in the community happy makes me happy.” Members of Conant Community Service Club also said how it is so fun to work with other clubs when planning events for the community and all the new people they meet.

On another note, some CHS community service clubs also offer community service hours, which can be useful for meeting requirements with certain programs such as the Harper Promise Scholarship Program.

For example Comp Sci Kids will give the hours you need for any community service program at Conant like Harper Promise. All that they ask of you is to just show commitment to the club and impact the younger students in the community for the long run by attending all the sessions and helping the younger students learn something new.

Things like community service hours can be gained at CHS, but the best part of these clubs is that they teach students certain life skills needed for the real world. Members of UNICEF have talked about many of their members gaining leadership skills, socializing skills, compassion, and networking with other people.

The Conant Community Service club also said that many of their members had learned time management, as they were able to make a balance between their studies, sports, and other clubs along with their role in Conant Community Service. All of these skills stated are used in the real world in areas like the workplace as time management, networking, and leadership are required in order to finish projects, meet deadlines, and have a balanced life with fun and work.

In summary, community service clubs at Conant are time efficient for students and a great way to have an impact on the people around us while learning new skills.
