ICK or treat, give me something good to eat!
Forget Christmas–Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year. There is just something so nostalgic about planning out my trick-or-treating map or trying new flavors spinoffs from classic candies.
However, as soon as I get home, I rummage through my bags to sort out the candies I like and the candies that are going to trick-or-treaters.
Here’s what I think are the most overhyped and most underappreciated Halloween candies.
The five most overrated candies:
1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Every time I see the bright orange wrapper, I immediately stick the candy in the Halloween bowl. From its sweet taste to its artificial peanut butter flavor, Reese’s doesn’t deserve an ounce of the hype that it receives.
2. Skittles
Skittles are always a staple when it comes to Halloween candies. However, they are extremely easy to get sick of. The only good thing about Skittles was their lime flavor, which they decided to discontinue for nine years.
3. Kit Kats
Kit Kats aren’t the worst thing ever, but they don’t offer much more than chocolate and wafer bars. I would never turn one down, but I hardly crave more. Also, I always get thirsty from the sandpaper-like wafers.
4. Twizzlers
Though Twizzlers may not be a favorite amongst trick-or-treaters, houses love to give them out. Twizzlers always taste too much like wax, and the candy always gets stuck in my teeth. It is hard to chew and it has no distinct flavor.
5. Hershey Kisses
The amount of Milk Chocolate Hershey kisses I get every year is absurd. While Hershey Kisses are fun to snack on, there are so many other better Hershey Kisses flavors like Birthday cake, Cookies ‘n’ Creme, and Hershey Hugs.
The 5 most underrated candies:
1. Almond Joy
Almond Joy is my all-time favorite candy. My mouth always waters just thinking about the tender, chewy coconut and almond covered in a layer of chocolate. People hate the coconut flavor, but the coconut is what makes this candy elite.
2. Gobstoppers
Gobstoppers are great to just keep a fruity flavor in your mouth for a long time. They have the right amount of sweetness and tartness, and I can’t stop after just one.
3. Starburst Duos
Starbursts are a classic, but around two years ago, I was introduced to Starburst Duos. The strawberry-watermelon and blue raspberry-lemonade starbursts were one of the best candies I have ever had. I have only had two in my life, and I have my fingers crossed for at least one this year.
4. 3 Musketeers
I have to admit, I get a good amount of 3 Musketeers every year. However, they’re like Milky Way’s invisible and underappreciated little sister. The texture of the fluffy mousse is a satisfying contrast to the milk chocolate layer.
5. Milk Duds
I’ve always been a huge Milk Duds fan. It is always a delight to taste the outer layer melt in my mouth, followed by the soft but chewy, and perfect balance of caramel and chocolate.
