From poolside to retirement: Saying goodbye to Terry, our swim assistant hero
The crisp smell of chlorine mixed with the deep blue light of the pool reflecting off the dimly lit walls is what comes to mind when recalling the swim unit. But there’s an integral element that we sometimes, unknowingly, skip over: our dependable guide by the pool, Teresa Nemecek, better known as Terry.
We all know Terry from our freshman days when we went into the pool for the first time and were terrified of even looking at the water. At the time, she probably seemed like just another teacher, someone who ensured everyone got through their daily swim session safely and efficiently. But there’s much more to Terry than meets the eye, and her upcoming retirement marks the start of a new chapter in her life that’s driven by creativity and passion.
Girls’ water polo coach and art teacher Justin Bickus worked closely with Terry. “Terry has always helped recruit athletes for our teams and helped beginner swimmers and water polo players find their way to the team and helps them learn the basics,” he said, emphasizing her dedication and strong work ethic.
Bickus said that Terry’s leadership and understanding of both the technical and motivational aspects of the sport have been invaluable in creating a cohesive, successful team.
Over the last 43 years, Terry has fostered many relationships with many people at Conant.
Wellness teacher Drewann Reibel said, “Her unmatched organization, wealth of experience, and warm, helping spirit have made her a pillar in our school community. Though much of what Terry does goes unnoticed, her impact is deeply felt by all who have had the privilege to work alongside her.”
What’s interesting about Terry is where her passion for swimming came from. She was always interested in aquatics, specifically diving. But as she started teaching swimming, it became more than just a hobby, as it evolved into a passion for educating.
“What will I miss the most? Teaching. Love teaching,” Terry shared. “They have to get their whole class across the pool…it’s always fun to watch.”
For Terry, retirement is not just an end to a career, but the beginning of a new chapter focused on creativity and personal fulfillment. Having spent years balancing two jobs and family, she now sees this time as a chance to dive deep into her artistic side.
Terry shared that she has plans to flesh out her artistic side by creating and making passion projects such as knitting something for her grandkids.
“I am going to retire and create. I’ve always been artistic, so I have a whole basement full of artistic projects to do,” she said.
Though Terry is leaving the poolside, her legacy will continue to ripple through the halls of Conant High School. Terry leaves behind a profound legacy of dedication, leadership, and passion for teaching. She may be retiring, but the impact of her work will echo for generations to come, forever a part of the swimming unit and Conant overall.
Reibel said, “We are truly going to feel her absence next year, but we couldn’t be more excited for her to begin this next chapter.”
