Smoking car prompts emergency response at Conant
Conant students and staff were greeted with a fire truck, an ambulance, and many emergency responders parked in Conant’s main lot on Monday, September 29. The vehicles remained in the parking lot for most of the morning as responders assessed the situation–a car with smoke coming out of it.
Audio from dispatchers reveals that at 5:16 a.m., Hoffman Estates Police received a report of a smoking black Buick. The Hoffman Estates Fire Department was called as a precaution. No one was inside the car or injured in the incident, though the vehicle was damaged.
Responders worked quickly to assess the vehicle, and it was eventually towed from the parking lot. Crier obtained no further information regarding the car or its owner.
Assistant Principal Dane Henning spoke of the school’s coordination with community safety officials, saying, “We have a great working relationship with the Hoffman Estates Fire Department and Police Department, and we’re very grateful for their quick response and all they do to ensure the safety of our Conant community.” Henning declined to comment on the vehicle’s owner.
The parking lot reopened after the vehicle was removed. In order to accommodate delays faced by students, Henning sent an email asking for teachers not to mark student tardies until after 8:30 a.m.
