Student members of Conant High School’s Cultural Awareness club filled the atrium with appetizers, dishes, and sweets from their own cultures, including Turkish, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Ukrainian, Puerto Rican, and more. The annual Food Tasting on Wednesday, November 13 brought students together to represent and share their cultures, highlighting the diversity of the Conant community.

Each dish brought by students carried its own unique story. Italian students Liliana Lobosco, ‘27, and Lily Stella, ‘26, shared traditional holiday foods. “We brought the same foods we had as kids. They bring comfort to us,” Stella said. “Italians love to eat, and these [dishes] have a lot of memories from our childhoods,” Lobosco added.

The Food Tasting allowed students to share their cultural practices and traditions. Irina Gut, ‘27, explained the cultural significance of Romanian dish cozonac, a sweet bread eaten at Easter; “[it] typically gets blessed before it goes in the oven to get baked.”

“The invartita (Romanian cheese pie) was new to me!” said Gut, explaining how she not only learned about other cultures, but also her own, through this event. “[We] heard a lot of ‘Wow, that tastes good.’ It makes us happy because people get to try new foods from our culture,” said Lobosco. She added that, even as a picky eater, “seeing everybody’s cultures, trying new foods I’ve never seen before… opens a whole new branch for me. [I] can’t wait for next year!”

“Nothing unites people more than food,” Cultural Awareness sponsor and Spanish teacher Patrick Malloy said. Another Cultural Awareness sponsor and social studies teacher Amy Spizziri added, “[We hope students realize this is a] safe space to be proud of your culture and share it!”
