Two Conant teachers awarded statewide honor
Two of Conant’s very own educators received prestigious awards on Sat. Oct, 28. Dean of Students and Science Teacher Erik Hauser and Science Teacher John Reyes received Awards of Meritorious Service through the “Those Who Excel” education awards program.
They earned this award, along with 18 other educators, and were given certificates for their achievements at a banquet in Bloomington, Illinois.
The award is given out by the Illinois State Board of Education to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the public school systems all across the state. Each school district is allowed to nominate an individual or group in multiple categories. Hauser was nominated for the classroom teacher category, and Reyes was nominated for the early career educator category.
Both nominees were chosen by Principal Julie Nowak back in March. After that, they were required to fill out a lengthy application.
“We had to submit a current resume, biography, an 11-page paper with questions about education and our philosophy. We also needed letters of recommendation from community members, students, and parents,” Hauser explained.
Hauser said, “When I heard I had been nominated, I felt overwhelmed, honored, and humbled. There are so many fantastic educators in Conant and the district.”
Reyes said that as an educator, it is nice to be recognized, but teaching is always his main focus. “I don’t teach to get the accolades, ” Reyes said. “I teach because I love it.”
On Thurs. Nov. 9, both Hauser and Reyes will be honored at the D211 board meeting.
