Art department gets new look over the summer
Over summer 2017, the art department is getting a new look. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.
The changes are mainly cosmetic and will include new shelving, counters, and cabinets in the 2D and 3D art studios. There will also be a new critique space added in the 2D studio.
Art student Isabella Griesmaier, ‘19, said, “The art room definitely experienced some wear and tear through all of the projects we did, so it’s nice to see it be renovated for future classes.”
Art Department Chair Erin Garrity-Duffey said, “There will be great storage for student work. [The art teachers] are so excited.”
This renovation is a result of a larger renovation done three years ago, which included the creation of the staircase by Door One, which changed the space of the art department.
Garrity-Duffey said that the renovations were a necessity as the new storage space will help to make the art studios more productive and enhance the students’ experiences.
“I’m so excited for the renovation and the flexibility and support that the administration has shown in working closely with us to ensure the design serves the students’ creative process and art experience to the fullest,” she added.
Garrity-Duffey is also looking forward to being the new Art Department Chair, beginning the ‘17-’18 school year.
She said, “The artists and instructors in the art department have so much to offer our school and surrounding community. Getting to facilitate their expression and voice is a dream come true.”
Her goal is to support and collaborate with the other art teachers to help enhance the art department at Conant High School.
