Model UN Prepares for First Competition
The Conant Model United Nations has their first competition of the year on Sept.14 at Stevenson High School from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is also their first competition as a team.
Model UN is competing with many other high school teams to discuss and debate issues from countries around the world. The more students in their group, the bigger the country they can get. Model UN Advisor, Vaishali Tajpuria said, “During the first competition, I expect students to learn how to research, negotiate, and learn more about how other countries operate.”
Co-Founder Joanne Velasquez, ‘19, said, “Since this is the first competition that any of the team members are participating in, I don’t expect us to win or anything. My team and I are actually hoping that this competition will be a learning experience so that the attending members can learn how to act in a competition and show the other members how future Model UN competitions might go.”
Tajpuria said, “I am absolutely confident with the learning experience we will receive with our first competition. I feel this will be beneficial and very helpful and I feel there’s always room to grow.”
Co-Founder Aparna Ayyah, ‘19, said, “I feel confident that we’ll go into the Stevenson meet ready to compete and give it our all. Since we’ve never been tested in a real competition before, I think the results will help us position ourselves better for our next meet.”
The club plans on doing more meets throughout the year and says this only the beginning. Ayyah, says, “I am not nervous because we have more meets down the line. This to me is a great way to kick of the year and really expose our team to Model UN competitions.”
