Senior ends season by going to state for Speech Team

Sachi Goel

The Conant administration does a send off for state competitor Sachi Goel.

Speech Team Co-President Sachi Goel, ‘19, qualified for state and competed on Feb. 15-16 in Peoria, IL. Goel competed in Radio Speaking, which she has been competing in since her freshman year.

During Sectionals, the top three competitors qualify for state, and Goel said, “When they announced fourth place, I burst into tears because I was overwhelmingly elated.”

Goel had been preparing by looking for the slightest mistakes or stumbles during her multiple coaching sessions. “Within the past few weeks [before Sectionals],” she said, “I [was] having a coaching session almost daily.”

Speech Team Head Coach Vera Bass said, “I was so excited for her that I started to cry. It was something that we always hope for our competitors trying to make it to State. Things clicked for her this year, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Speech Team Coach Lori Stella said, “Sachi’s confidence has grown immensely.  She has worked diligently to accomplish this goal of going to State. We were so proud of and excited for her. It was so fun to watch her up on stage as she found out she took 2nd place in Sectionals.”

Reflecting on leaving Conant Speech as a graduating senior, Goel said, “I hope the Conant Speech Team never loses the bond that has been created between each and every member,” she said. “When future team members look back on their years in speech, I hope they are filled with a sense of pride and joy; I know I am.”
