Gym floor refurbished, other changes to come
The Conant gym floor was refurbished from June 22-July 14 in a process that included sanding, repainting the lines and markings, and sealing.
Buildings and Grounds Manager, Keith Bundgard, said the gym floor gets refurbished about every 15 years. Athletic Director John Kane said, “Each year there is a light sanding done on the floor, then a coat of sealant is applied, which made the floor darker and darker every year, which led the floor to be a dark yellow.”
Bundgard said that two people were involved in the process, one person for the sanding and painting, and one person for the finishing of the floor.
Bundgard added, “Our entire floor system this year, which includes the refurbishing of the main floor and a screen and recoat of the north gym, will cost about $70,000.”
The refurbished floor is not the only change that will happen in the main gym this year. During last school year, the old banners, which had been in the gym since the mid-1990s, were removed and are currently in the process of being sold by the Conant High School booster club.
In replacement of the banners, Kane said that there will be a mural of the school logo in the gym that will include information about all the championships Conant has won.
“The years were hard to follow on the banners, but the main thing is we are going to put big fans in the ceiling, which will cool down the gym. The banners were in the way of that and we were also running out of space for them,” said Kane.
The school mural is expected to be completed in the fall, and the ceiling fans will be installed later in the 2017-2018 school year.
